Too fearful to cross the Atlantic Ocean, she was promptly replaced by a 60-year-old Black woman named Agnes Moodey, the first of many look-a-likes. Moodey appeared at countless venues throughout France. Rutt named the original company after “Old Aunt Jemima,” an 1875 song from a minstrel show that featured performers in blackface who wore aprons and bandana headbands.
